If your provider suggests semaglutide, one of your first questions may be about dosing. Knowing your semaglutide dosage plan helps you understand what to expect each month. In this guide, we explain how weekly dosing works, why it starts low and what to do if you miss a dose.
How Semaglutide Dosing Works
Semaglutide for weight loss is a once-weekly injection. You take it on the same day each week, at any time of day, with or without food. In addition, it goes under the skin of your stomach, thigh or upper arm. To learn how the medication works in your body, read our guide on how semaglutide works for weight loss.
Typical Semaglutide Dosage Schedule
For weight management, the FDA-approved label for semaglutide 2.4 mg (Wegovy®) uses a slow, step-by-step schedule. Each step usually lasts four weeks:
- Weeks 1–4: 0.25 mg once a week
- Weeks 5–8: 0.5 mg once a week
- Weeks 9–12: 1 mg once a week
- Weeks 13–16: 1.7 mg once a week
- Week 17 and after: 2.4 mg once a week, the usual maintenance dose
However, this is only a general guide. Your provider may keep you on a lower dose longer, especially if you have side effects or already see steady progress. Some people also stay at 1.7 mg as their maintenance dose.

Why Your Dose Starts Low
Semaglutide slows how fast your stomach empties. As a result, stomach side effects such as nausea are common at first. Starting low gives your body time to adjust. Then, each small increase helps you reach an effective dose with fewer problems. You can learn more in our guide to GLP-1 side effects.
What If You Miss a Dose?
The medication label gives these general rules:
- Next dose is more than 2 days away: take the missed dose as soon as you remember.
- Next dose is less than 2 days away: skip the missed dose, and then take your next one on your regular day.
- You missed more than 2 weeks: call your provider first, because you may need to restart at a lower dose.
Also, never take two doses to make up for one you missed.
Semaglutide Dosage Tips for Better Results
- Pick a set day: for example, choose a day that is easy to remember, such as Sunday.
- Rotate injection sites: change the spot each week to help prevent skin irritation.
- Do not change your dose on your own: always talk with your provider first.
- Eat protein first: smaller portions make protein even more important. See our guide on protein for weight loss.
- Track more than the scale: body composition shows whether you are losing fat or muscle.
Semaglutide vs. Tirzepatide Dosing
Tirzepatide is also a once-weekly injection. However, it uses different doses, starting at 2.5 mg and rising in 2.5 mg steps. For that reason, you cannot compare the two medications milligram for milligram. Learn more about how tirzepatide works.
