For adults who qualify, your provider may prescribe an FDA-approved appetite suppressant, such as phentermine or phendimetrazine. Also, these medications are used together with a lower-calorie eating plan, exercise and behavior changes.

Prescription Medications
Phentermine & Phendimetrazine
Phentermine and phendimetrazine are prescription appetite suppressants approved by the FDA for short-term use in weight management. They help decrease appetite, so smaller portions feel more manageable. However, they work best when you also make healthy food choices, stay active and build new habits.
Because both are controlled substances (phentermine is Schedule IV and phendimetrazine is Schedule III), they are only available with a prescription after a medical evaluation. As a result, your provider prescribes them in limited courses and follows up with you regularly.
How to take them safely:
- Take your dose early in the day, exactly as directed, to help avoid trouble sleeping
- Swallow tablets or capsules whole unless your provider tells you otherwise
- Never take more than prescribed or share your medication
- Tell your provider about all medicines and supplements you take
Still, these medications are not right for everyone. Your provider will check for:
- Heart disease, stroke, irregular heartbeat or uncontrolled high blood pressure
- Overactive thyroid or glaucoma
- History of drug or alcohol misuse
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Use of MAO inhibitors or other stimulants
- Age: they are not recommended for children and teens, and older adults may need extra caution

Of course, not all patients qualify for a prescription program. In addition, your provider may pause your medication for a while to let your body adjust and to help prevent plateaus. During these breaks, we offer alternative programs, so you can keep making progress toward your goals.
In some cases, your provider may also prescribe hydrochlorothiazide, a diuretic (water pill) commonly used to treat high blood pressure. In other words, it helps the body remove extra salt and water. Still, it removes water weight, not body fat, and it is only used when your provider finds it appropriate.
Common side effects may include:
- Dry mouth or unpleasant taste
- Trouble sleeping or restlessness
- Faster heartbeat or higher blood pressure
- Constipation, dizziness or headache
Stop taking it and get medical care right away for:
- Chest pain, shortness of breath or fainting
- Swelling in your legs or ankles
- A pounding or irregular heartbeat

Lipotropic nutrients support the liver’s normal processing of fats, especially as part of a weight loss plan.
Chromium
An essential trace mineral involved in how the body uses sugar and fat. It is also available as chromium picolinate or chromium polynicotinate.
Vitamin B-12
A vitamin your body needs for energy metabolism and healthy red blood cells. It is given as a weekly injection or, instead, as a sublingual tablet.
